Oh La La Dancers — original oil on canvas by Veronica Ruiz de Velasco, three dancers bending in a can-can line in feathered pink and magenta tutus with yellow bows on a pastel wash above a green floor

Oh La La Dancers

Three dancers bend forward in unison across the wide canvas, tan legs planted in a can-can kick line above a dark green stage floor, each rump wrapped in a plush, feathered tutu — pale iridescent pink on the outer two, hot magenta on the center figure — cinched with a bright yellow bow at the waist and a matching bow at the small of the back, save for the middle dancer's, which erupts in a confetti of color. Above them, the background dissolves into a loose wash of pastel pink, yellow, and sky blue, brushed with the same loose energy as the ruffled skirts, while small red flats peek out beneath the outer two figures, the center dancer's foot dissolving into the dark floor. The repetition of pose and color across the trio, cropped at the waist so only the tumbling costumes and bared legs read, gives the piece a lively, Moulin Rouge kick of motion and mischief.
