Gallery Veronica Ruiz de Velasco

Flores Piña

Unlike the thickly built surfaces elsewhere in this body of work, this canvas is mostly bare white ground, with a woven yellow basket sketched in loose, calligraphic strokes — crosshatched lines forming its lattice body and a rounded, pineapple-like silhouette. Red circular scribbles, doubled and tripled into loops, stand in for blooms clustered at the basket's mouth, alongside olive-green squiggles for leaves and a faint underlayer of blue wash showing through the white. A dark navy band anchors the bottom edge like a tabletop or shadow. The effect is closer to a quick gestural drawing in paint than a finished still life.
