Nena Flowers — by Veronica Ruiz de Velasco: an armful of red roses in twisting strokes held against a pale dress on a turquoise ground

Nena Flowers

An armful of red roses, built in short, twisting strokes of crimson, white, cobalt, and lemon yellow, crowds nearly the entire canvas, held against a torso rendered only as a pale triangle of dress and a sun-toned forearm. Green stems trail downward in loose vertical marks toward the bouquet's base. Behind it all, a turquoise ground scumbled with white and dark green gives the impression of dappled outdoor light, so the flowers seem to glow forward off the surface.
